U.S. spot Ether funds attracted stronger flows than Bitcoin funds across the four U.S. trading sessions from September 8 through September 11, 2026, but the divergence did not necessarily signal a broad investor rotation from BTC to ETH. Bitfinex Alpha connected part of the demand to traders building positions around exchange-traded funds and CME futures.
The weekly flow split
Bitfinex reported that spot Ether funds received $196.9 million during the week it reviewed. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs, by contrast, recorded $462.7 million in net redemptions across four trading days. The Bitcoin outflows followed three weeks in which the products had been a major source of demand.
Those numbers describe a short window, not a permanent change in institutional preference. Fund flows can move with hedging, portfolio rebalancing and derivatives positioning. Comparing the two assets only by headline inflows risks missing why capital entered one wrapper and left another.
Why collateral use changes the interpretation
According to Bitfinex Alpha, traders were accumulating Ether ETF positions for use as collateral in CME futures trades while seeking yield from the spread between spot and futures prices. This is commonly described as a cash-and-carry or basis strategy. A trader holds spot exposure, or a regulated wrapper representing it, and takes an offsetting futures position to target the pricing difference rather than making a simple directional bet.
The accessible upstream summary supports the collateralized CME-futures explanation but does not expose enough of the underlying report to verify every component of the trade. The defensible conclusion is narrower: ETF demand can reflect the needs of a hedged derivatives strategy rather than an expectation that ETH’s outright price will rise.
Positioning can amplify short-term moves
Because the primary Bitfinex page was access-restricted during review, open-interest, basis-rate, staking-yield and liquidation details were not independently confirmed and are not used here as evidence.
When short covering, collateral demand and fund flows occur together, price and flow data can look more decisive than the underlying move. If the basis narrows or financing conditions change, participants may unwind both legs without changing their long-term view of Ethereum.
What to monitor next
Investors can separate structural adoption from trade mechanics by watching several indicators together: ETF subscriptions and redemptions, CME open interest, futures basis, funding conditions and unhedged spot demand. Persistent inflows accompanied by broader spot buying would tell a different story from inflows that reverse as a derivatives spread closes.
The September split showed that Ether funds can serve more than one institutional purpose. It did not, by itself, establish a lasting transfer of preference from Bitcoin to Ethereum.
