Altcoin Season Is Still Not Here: What the Index Actually Measures

Rising altcoin prices have revived a familiar question: is it altcoin season yet? The index built to answer that question is still saying no. The Altcoin Season Index sits in neutral territory, well below the level that would settle the debate, even as tokens such as XRP and Solana post daily gains that outpace Bitcoin.

The reason comes down to what the gauge actually measures. It is a breadth indicator, not a leaderboard. A season is declared only when 75% of the top 50 cryptocurrencies have outperformed Bitcoin over the previous 90 days. If a quarter or fewer beat Bitcoin, the market is in Bitcoin Season. Everything in between is neutral.

That distinction matters because a handful of strong performers cannot trigger a season on their own. The index rewards breadth: many coins across the market rising against Bitcoin, sustained over three months. A rally concentrated in a few large-cap altcoins can lift prices without moving the reading anywhere near the 75 threshold. Put another way, the gauge asks how many of the top 50 coins beat Bitcoin over the trailing quarter, not how far any single coin climbed. Two or three large caps rising double digits while the rest of the field lags leave the reading neutral, because the denominator is the full 50-coin universe.

The latest figures illustrate the gap. The most recent update placed the index at 56, up from 48 on September 19, a climb of eight points that still leaves it about 19 points short of altcoin season. The market has left Bitcoin Season, flipping to neutral on September 2, but it has not crossed into altseason.

Two cautions are worth keeping in mind before quoting any single number. The index recalculates continuously against the trailing 90 days, so any published figure is a point-in-time snapshot rather than a fixed reading. Not every provider samples the same universe, either. The classic version uses the top 50 coins and excludes stablecoins and asset-backed tokens such as wrapped Bitcoin and staked Ether, since those track another asset by design. Providers that use a different universe can print a slightly different number on the same day.

The practical takeaway is to keep direction and breadth separate. A rising index does signal that altcoins are outperforming Bitcoin more broadly than they were over the summer. But a climb inside the neutral band is a reason to read headlines carefully: “highest level in months” is not the same thing as “altcoin season.” The index is best read alongside other market signals, such as Bitcoin dominance and aggregate trading volume, rather than as a standalone verdict on the market.

What would actually confirm the shift? A broad advance that keeps at least three-quarters of the largest coins ahead of Bitcoin for a full quarter, pushing the index to 75 or above. Until that happens, the honest answer to the seasonal question remains the same: not yet. Traders watching for a flip should focus on how many coins are participating in the move, not on the size of any single token’s gain.
