Total crypto market capitalization rose 39.6% in the third quarter of 2026, adding $840.1 billion to close the period at $3.0 trillion. That is the strongest quarterly gain since the fourth quarter of 2024, and it ended three straight quarters of decline. The market is still 4.0% below where it started the year, and trading activity did not keep up with prices.
August did more than half the work
Most of the rebound arrived in a single month. Market cap climbed 21.8%, or $489.8 billion, in August alone. CoinGecko’s 2026 Q3 Crypto Industry Report ties that surge to a US Treasury announcement that it would at least double buybacks of long-dated government bonds, plus steady net inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs. A rally that leans this heavily on one month and two catalysts is easier to reverse than a broad one.
Ethereum led the majors
Ethereum rose 71.0% to $2,684 over the quarter, outpacing Bitcoin’s 42.7% gain and breaking its own three-quarter losing streak. Spot Ether ETFs took in $3.1 billion in net inflows, reversing the first half’s outflows. Hyperliquid’s HYPE made the sharper move, rising 40.5% in four days and peaking at an all-time high of $98 on September 23.
Volume kept shrinking
Prices rebounded, but participation did not. Average daily trading volume fell 8.6% from the second quarter to $73.3 billion, a third consecutive quarterly decline. It recovered inside the period, from $57.7 billion a day in July to $94.8 billion in September. Spot volume on the top ten centralized exchanges dropped 14.2% to $1.65 trillion, with Binance taking 42.7% of the quarter’s spot share, up from 38.7%.
On-chain activity told a similar split story. Robinhood Chain, which opened to the public on July 1, generated more than $88.9 billion in trading volume and averaged 9.5 million transactions a day, ranking it the third most active chain in the report. Much of that flow came from memecoin trading rather than the tokenized stocks and real-world assets the network was built for.
Derivatives recovered faster than spot
The sharpest recovery showed up in derivatives rather than spot trading. Open interest on the top ten centralized perpetual exchanges climbed 40.6% to close above $100 billion for the first time since the third quarter of 2025. Binance added $12.7 billion on its own, while KuCoin and Deribit lost ground. CoinGecko calls the result an uneven recovery, not a broad one.
What the report leaves open
The quarter ended September 30, and the numbers raise two questions. More than half of the gain came from August’s Treasury- and ETF-driven move, so the market has not yet shown it can rise without those tailwinds. With total market cap still 4.0% below the start of the year, the fourth quarter will show whether trading volume starts to follow prices instead of lagging them.
