Robinhood’s third quarter of 2026 was the company’s best on record, and it was also the quarter its cryptocurrency business shrank into the smallest of its four trading lines. The two facts sit together: the brokerage’s revenue engine is rotating away from spot crypto toward products that settle faster.
The mix behind the record
Total net revenue rose 12% year over year to $1.42 billion, and transaction-based revenue climbed 19% to $867 million, according to Robinhood’s third-quarter 2026 results. Growth came from three categories. Event contracts contributed $173 million, up more than sixfold. Options added $399 million, up 31%, and equities $121 million, up 41%. Cryptocurrency transaction revenue was the outlier at $120 million, down 55%. Activity followed the same pattern: traders executed a record 16.4 billion event contracts, up more than sevenfold, and a record 905 million options contracts.
The contraction shows up in volume as well as revenue. Crypto notional trading volume fell 38% to $50 billion for the quarter. The retail-facing Robinhood App drove the steeper drop, down 48% to $21 billion, while Bitstamp, the institutional-leaning exchange Robinhood acquired, fell a milder 28% to $29 billion. The gap points to a retail-led slowdown rather than a strategic retreat.
Two crypto businesses heading opposite ways
The shrinking spot desk is only half the picture. In its first full quarter on mainnet, Robinhood Chain became a top-five chain by revenue and volume, generating more than $80 billion in decentralized-exchange volume and over $50 million in chain fees. Those are protocol-level fees accruing to a settlement network that other applications and traders use, a different income stream from a brokerage’s take on app trades.
What the numbers do not prove
The release attributes the crypto decline to no single cause, and the figures should not be read as proof that prediction markets pulled demand out of spot crypto. Event contracts settle against a binary outcome, often within a day, while a crypto position can sit through a downturn for weeks. Both trends may reflect the same preference for shorter-duration trades. Rising event-contract volume alongside falling crypto volume is correlation, not a demonstrated transfer.
The test ahead
Robinhood is not stepping back from crypto. In the same quarter it launched crypto trading in the UK and received authorization from the Dubai Financial Services Authority to roll out equities, crypto, ETFs and investment tokens beginning in 2027, alongside perpetual futures for eligible U.S. customers. Net deposits reached $15.7 billion, total platform assets rose 19% to $396 billion, and cash and cash equivalents grew to $5.8 billion.
Profitability held up even as the mix shifted. Net income fell 14% to $476 million and diluted earnings per share fell 16% to $0.51, while adjusted EBITDA rose 9% to $808 million. Chairman and CEO Vlad Tenev framed the quarter around ownership, calling broad ownership “essential to a free, stable, and prosperous society,” while CFO Shiv Verma described the period as the company’s highest ever for revenues.
Whether the crypto decline is a cycle or a ceiling will show up in three places next quarter: whether app crypto notional stabilizes, whether Robinhood Chain holds its pace, and whether perpetual futures add volume without cannibalizing spot. The Q3 report frames those questions without answering them.
